FRIDAY TIDBIT: Transmissions

Transmission maintenance is important to help keep gears turning for a long time.

Transmission Filter
Automatic transmissions have become more sophisticated with additional gears and computerized electronic controls and are designed to work with the engine controls for best operation. Have the transmission inspected and serviced as recommended in your owner’s manual. If you don't know your recommendations, contact us and we can look it up for you.

MAINTENANCE:
Regular maintenance for transmissions includes exchanging the fluid and changing the filters. Each vehicle maintenance schedule varies, but usually this need to be every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

ROLL SHIFTING:
To prevent your transmission gears from stripping, always come to a complete stop before shifting from Drive into Reverse or vice versa.

DON'T RIDE THE CLUTCH:
If your vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, improperly releasing the clutch pedal, pushing it too far or not far enough, or riding it at the point of engagement can damage parts. Strive for smooth, seamless shifting.

LEAKS:If you notice a reddish brown stain on your driveway, you may have a transmission leak. Have it checked as soon as possible.

BEWARE OF ADDITIVES:
Mixing additives into oil, transmission fluid, or gasoline may upset the chemical balances that already exist in these fluids. Stay away from additional additives unless recommended by your service consultant.
