FRIDAY TIDBIT: EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve
The EGR Valve is an emissions devise. It recirculates exhaust gas back into the intake to take up space in the combustion chamber so the fire is not as hot. By doing that, it reduces the amount of nitrous oxides (or NOx) coming out of the exhaust pipe. NOx that is released into the atmosphere becomes low level ozone and that is what the brown haze is that looms over the city.

FRIDAY TIDBIT: ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

This is a wheel speed sensor, ABS wheel speed sensor, or anti lock brake wheel speed sensor

It is an A/C electric generator that creates its own a/c voltage. It puts out ac pulses on a frequency that the ABS computer monitors. When you go faster it puts out a higher frequency and is translated to the speed of the wheel. When a wheel skids or stops, the computer senses that and goes into anti-lock mode.

You have one at every wheel, but on some trucks you have RWAL or rear wheel anti-lock and have only one sensor on the rear end. They sense the rear wheels only not one on each wheel.

FREE Women's Auto Care Workshops: "Knowledge Is Power"

FREE
Women's Auto Care Workshops: "Knowledge Is Power"
sponsored by ACDelco

VIEW A VIDEO OF WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS AT THE END OF THIS POST!

If you are interested in learning about upcoming FREE Women's Auto Care Workshops like this one,
email michelle@ginesautoservice.com
and we will contact you when the next one is scheduled.

You can also subscribe to this blog to stay informed of events like this and more. Workshops are held approximately every 6 months. To ensure the best possible learning environment, workshops are limited to 25 participants, but other dates and nights may be added as needed.

Woman participants from all over the valley attend and learn valuable information to help them gain more power when it comes to taking charge of their auto repair. Participants are able to ask ASE Certified mechanics questions they have about vehicles and receive valuable knowledge, all in a casual and friendly shop environment.

Topics are discussed by answering questions that the participants had, including:
  • Tires:
    • What type of tires do you need for your specific vehicle, and how do you tell by looking at the tire if it's the right type?
    • Quality of tires: What is the difference between A, B, C tires, and how do I tell?
    • How do I tell the age of the tire
  • Brakes:
    • If my brakes are squeaking, does it mean they are worn out and need to be changed? Why or why not?
    • What are the different type of brakes, and what type is right for my vehicle? How can I tell?
  • Money and Budget:
    • What is the best way to avoid costly repairs before they happen?
    • When a light on my dashboard comes on, which problems do I need to have addressed immediately, and which ones are just warnings to check it soon?
  • Vehicle Maintenance:
    • Is there is a difference between a $14.95 oil change, compared to a $29.95 oil change? Aren't all oil changes the same?
    • Filters: Why the cheapest filter isn't necessarily the best, and why
    • Changing Fluids: Do I really need to change my oil every 3,000 miles, and why or why not? What other fluids should I be changing, and how often?
  • Many other topics that the participants signified in their registration that they wanted to discuss.

Participants also receive:
  • A hot, catered meal from a local restaurant
  • A goody bag to take home full of helpful car care information provided by many local vendors (ACDelco, Carquest)
  • A workbook to take home full of helpful information for them to refer to at later dates
  • Raffle Prize drawings at the end of the workshop
What participants are saying about these workshops:
  • "I really enjoyed this seminar. Very informative. Thanks Gines!" - Holly M.
  • "Would like to come back in 3 months. I want to bring my daughters. Thanks! Great class, lots of information". - Penny L.

FRIDAY TIDBIT: Air Filters

Air Filter
Air filters are made of paper. They filter the air that goes into the combustion of the engine.

The paper filter is where you should never cut prices to buy cheaper quality ones, but many do. It can be one of the most important elements of making an engine last a long time. Paper is porous, so the better quality filters have smaller holes in the paper to filter better. Cheaper air filters can come apart and go into the engine.

If you use cheap filters the dust will go into the engine. This will wear out the rings and cylinder walls of the engine. That is one reason why some vehicles get 100,000 miles out of their engines, when others get well over 200,000 miles.Cheaper filters have a lot less paper surface area; therefore, they don’t last as long, and they plug up sooner.

If you have a turbo or supercharger engine, the quality of the filter is especially important.  The braces on the filter prevent dust from being sucked into the turbo.
We have a display set up in our office to show the difference between good quality filters and low quality filters. Stop by any time and we will go over it with you!

FRIDAY TIDBIT: Transmissions

Transmission maintenance is important to help keep gears turning for a long time.

Transmission Filter
Automatic transmissions have become more sophisticated with additional gears and computerized electronic controls and are designed to work with the engine controls for best operation. Have the transmission inspected and serviced as recommended in your owner’s manual. If you don't know your recommendations, contact us and we can look it up for you.

MAINTENANCE:
Regular maintenance for transmissions includes exchanging the fluid and changing the filters. Each vehicle maintenance schedule varies, but usually this need to be every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

ROLL SHIFTING:
To prevent your transmission gears from stripping, always come to a complete stop before shifting from Drive into Reverse or vice versa.

DON'T RIDE THE CLUTCH:
If your vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, improperly releasing the clutch pedal, pushing it too far or not far enough, or riding it at the point of engagement can damage parts. Strive for smooth, seamless shifting.

LEAKS:If you notice a reddish brown stain on your driveway, you may have a transmission leak. Have it checked as soon as possible.

BEWARE OF ADDITIVES:
Mixing additives into oil, transmission fluid, or gasoline may upset the chemical balances that already exist in these fluids. Stay away from additional additives unless recommended by your service consultant.
