FRIDAY TIDBIT: Mass Air Flow Sensor

Mass Air Flow Sensor
The mass air flow sensor uses small wires that sense the amount of air moving across them. They in turn tell the computer how long to open the injectors for the fuel to go into the engine.

The most common reason we see them go bad is from bad, incorrect, or cheap air filters letting dirt get onto the sensor wires and then it can't measure the air correctly.

FRIDAY TIDBIT: Ignition Control Module

Ignition Control Modules

The ignition control module, located on the engine, regulates the ignition system. It sends power to the ignition coil, which creates a spark that starts the engine. There are several signs of a bad ignition control module.

Poor Acceleration
If the ignition control module is faulty, the car may shake or jerk with increasing speed. Also, the vehicle may seem to slow down instead of speed up when the gas pedal is pressed.

Failure to Start
The vehicle may not start. The engine may turn over but never crank. Also, turning the ignition key may produce a clicking sound from the engine, but no spark.

Overheating
The vehicle may show signs of overheating. If the temperature of the engine rises above normal, the vehicle will lose power. After the engine cools down, the vehicle will start again. If the ignition control module is the problem, the engine will overheat repeatedly, causing further damage that will prevent it from starting at all.

Replacement
A faulty ignition control module results when other parts, such as the spark plugs, fail. Accordingly, a repair shop will check other parts of your vehicle's ignition system for damage. Any parts that are found faulty should be replaced along with the ignition control module to avoid a recurrence of the initial problem.

Check Your Facebook Settings ASAP!

Because I don't want you to miss out on important auto tips and information, I wanted to give you all a heads up about a new setting on Facebook that might have you missing updates. I've noticed that many of our "regular" fans on Facebook haven't been seeing the contests and updates lately, and this explains it!

If you've noticed lately that you're only getting updates on Facebook from the same people, you're not the only one. The reason - Facebook has a new setting that is automatically set to show posts from the people the you interact with the most. Whatever that means...

Anyway, it a really simple fix and here's how:

At the top of your Facebook home page, click Most Recent
Click the down arrow next to Most Recent
Click Edit Options

A box will pop up and you can choose from two options: Show posts from ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND PAGES or Show posts from friends and pages you interact with the most.

Select SHOW POSTS FROM ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND PAGES.

A HUGE thanks to MySLCMommy for this valuable information!

FRIDAY TIDBIT: Tires

Tires are one of the most important parts on your vehicle that you need to maintain and make sure they are in good condition. Having a blowout on the freeway, or not being able to get into your neighborhood after a snowstorm because your tires are bald is very inconvenient. By keeping an eye on your tires and the condition they are in, you can eliminate a lot of headache on your part.
What TYPE Of Tires Do I Need?
Always check your owners manual to see what kind of tires you need for your specific vehicle. If you can't find the information, ask us and we can look it up for you. At our recent FREE Women's Auto Care Workshop: Knowledge Is Power, we handed out information sheets on Load Index, Speed Rating, and Tire Size. You need to take all of these into consideration when purchasing tires. Know the right kind of tires for your specific vehicle! As always, if you ever have any questions on your tire size, just ask us! We would be glad to go over it with you and explain it to you.

Determining The AGE Of A Tire
When purchasing a tire, you are going to want to know when that tire was made. Buying tires that are too old can cause you problems such as blowouts and flats. We also handed out an information sheet on Determing The Age Of A Tire at our Women's Auto Care Workshop that will help explain how to determine how old the tire is. The date the tire was made is found in the U.S. D.O.T. Tire Identification Number.

QUICK TIPS WHEN CHANGING A FLAT:
  • Use common sense! If it is not a safe place to stop and change your tire, drive to the closest "safe spot" where you can change it without danger to yourself.
  • Make sure you are on level ground
  • It is best if everybody gets out of the vehicle. If that is not  possible, then make sure the people inside the vehicle are holding as still as they can. The vehicle bouncing around can cause the car to slip off the jack, causing you harm
  • When replacing the hubcap back on the tire, make sure you do not cover up the air valve.
  • If at all possible, keep a star wrench in your vehicle for when you need to change your tire. If your lug nuts are on tight, they are easier to get off with a star wrench. While pushing forward with your foot, you can also pull back with your hands. It is also easier to get the lug nuts on tighter with a star wrench.

Socks For Soldiers

We are teaming up with Enjoy Utah! to send socks to a friend serving in the military in Afghanistan. We recently received a message from his wife that they are in need of socks over there. Unfortunately, the Afghani soldiers there dig through dumpsters to find old socks to use. If we send the socks to our friend, he will gladly pass them out to those in need.

We are putting together packages to send to him and his company. If you would like to donate socks, or any other item, it is gladly appreciated and we will see that they receive it.

You can drop the items off to our shop during regular business hours. (8am to 6pm Monday through Friday)

Gines Auto Service
4261 W 5415 S
Kearns, UT  84118

If you want to donate but do not want to have to drop the items off, you can donate money and we will buy socks to send with that money. We will also send you a receipt of socks and items purchased for the soldiers as proof that your money is being spent for the soldiers. Just leave us your email address with your payment and we will email you a copy of the receipt.

If you absolutely cannot donate, even a letter to the soldiers over there is greatly appreciated. You can fax it to Enjoy Utah! at (801) 679-4744 or drop it off at Gines Auto Service.

Other items the soldiers like and appreciate:
  • Cookies and breads - stuff that's homemade is awesome! (You can freeze it and foodsaver it and it's good to go)
  • Books
  • Movies
  • Candy, jerky, trail mixes and granola
  • Our other friend that has since returned home also really liked getting soup mixes, oatmeal packets, hot chocolate.....anything he could add hot water to and eat.
If you have any questions on "Socks For Soldiers", please email michelle@enjoyutah.org.

Thank you so much for helping out our soldiers so far away from home!

FRIDAY TIDBIT: Steering Knuckle

The steering  knuckle is the part of the vehicle that the wheel bearings are attached to. When you turn your steering wheel, this is the part that pivots and turns your tires in the direction you want to go.

This is a part that doesn't go bad very often, but it can. If your wheel bearings are worn out, make sure you change them, because that is something that can cause the steering knuckle to go bad.
