This Year’s Christmas Tree: “Until All The Pieces Fit”

2013-12-09 15.29.03

Every year, we attend the opening auction night of Festival Of Trees, and purchase a tree to display in our office. This year’s tree, “Until All The Pieces Fit”, is now on display! Stop by our office during regular business hours and check out the amazing time and details put into it by those that decorated and donated it.

2013-12-09 15.29.53The theme of this tree is puzzles, which is to raise awareness for autism. It was donated and decorated by the Holbrook and Johnston families, in honor of two year old Devin. “My autism does not define me. I define autism. I am Devin!”

These cute little boy was diagnosed early with autism, and due to the early intervention program and therapists at Primary Children’s Hospital, he is thriving.

1 out of 47 children in Utah are diagnosed with autism. Chances are, most of us have somebody in our family or know of somebody with autism. This is why this tree jumped out at us at the Festival, and moved us to purchase it for display this year.

ResizedImage_1386640742293Inscription on the back of the drawing to the right:
My two-year old son was the inspiration and model for this drawing. At this age, he was just beginning to learn about himself and what the world has to offer. I believe that this self-exploration and development continues throughout our lives in our quest to make ourselves whole. When we keep our minds open to new experiences, we are continually “putting it together”.

The 12 Days of ……Winter Emergency Car Kit

1483381_10153639782595002_331366542_n

Today begins our new series on getting you prepared for a winter emergency while in your vehicle. If you just compile one item at a time, it doesn’t seem so overwhelming!

This is also a great gift to put together for a loved one for Christmas. Knowing that your loved one is stuck in traffic overnight in freezing temperatures is a lot more bearable if you know they have a warm blanket, food and other necessities to get them through.

Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages, and we will list one item per day to add to your kit. You can also come and check back here, and we will add items each day.

HINT: If you search “Car Emergency Kit” on Pinterest, it will give you a ton of creative ways to pack your emergency kit! Follow us on Pinterest for more ideas.

Day 1: Blanket
You never know when you are going to be stranded in your vehicle in traffic, or get stuck in the snow, or any other kind of unforeseen circumstance during the winter. Blankets were one of the first things the
Utah Highway Patrol had to hand out to motorists stuck on the freeway. A blanket is also needed in accidents to keep people warm to prevent them from going into shock.

Day #2: Snacks and Water
You never know how long you are going to be stranded, so make sure to always have snacks packed in your vehicle, especially if you are diabetic or hypoglycemic. Snacks high in protein are always best. Don't forget bottled water!

Day #3: Road Flares
Road flares are a great item to have in your Winter Emergency Car Kit. They can get the attention of those searching for you, and also alert others to use caution around your vehicle. One thing people don't think of, is that they are an easy way to start a fire if needed. Road flares are a MUST HAVE in your emergency car kit!

Day #4: Snow Scraper
Everybody should have a snow scraper in their vehicle, especially this time of year! Remember to wipe off all the snow off your windshield before turning on your wipers. Wiper Transmission/motors are expensive to fix, and is a repair that can be prevented. Don't forget to turn your wipers off when before turning your car off...you don't want them coming on automatically when you start your vehicle!

Day #5: Extra Windshield Washer Fluid
This time of year, especially when it has snowed, your windshield gets extra dirty. Make sure you have an extra bottle of windshield washer fluid in your kit so that you can fill up your reservoir if you run out. Not being able to see through a dirty, salty window will cause low visibility, which is a leading cause of accidents.

Day #6: Kitty Litter or Ice/Snow Melt
Kitty litter is great for when you are stuck on ice or in the snow. Throw a handful underneath your tire, and it will help you get traction. Put a bag of it on your grocery list today, and add it to your winter emergency car kit. Ice/Snow Melt works great as well. .

Day #7: Cell phone and charger
Not only is a cell phone necessary to call for help, but if you are hurt and cannot call, emergency personnel can track your location according to your cell phone. A dead cell phone is no help to anybody, so make sure you have an extra charger or battery. There are many options available.
FYI: You do NOT need to have a current cell provider to call 911! Emergency personnel can be called from any wireless phone, regardless of if you have a service provider or not! If you do not have a cell phone, get an old one and keep in your vehicle!

Day #8: Spare tire and tire changing kit
A flat tire is one of the most common types of roadside emergencies. Roadside assistance is great, but what if you are traveling in an area without cell service, and cannot call for help? Every driver should have a spare, know where it is on their vehicle and how to access it, and have a jack and other necessary items for changing a tire.
(NOTE: Not all jacks fit all vehicles! Make sure you have the proper tire jack for your specific vehicle!)
Also, getting your tire off can be difficult if the lug nuts were put on tight. A star wrench is great for changing any kind of tire.
If you don't know all of the information above, stop by and we can show you!

Day #9: Warm Winter gear and a change of clothes
Having an extra set of warm, dry clothes can be critical if you get stranded. If you have to get out and push your vehicle out of a snow bank, chances are you are going to get soaked. Having a change of dry clothes could be the difference in your survival. Make sure you always have good walking shoes, as well as a warm coat, hat, gloves and other winter gear, even if you are only driving a short distance from home.

Day #10: Shovel
A shovel is a great tool to have in your winter emergency car kit. It can help you move snow around your vehicle if you get stuck. A metal one is great for chipping away ice that is piled up.

Day #11: Flashlight with extra batteries
You should carry a flashlight on you at all times. Make sure you have extra batteries as a backup.

Day #12: At least 1/2 tank of gas at all times!
You never know when you will be stuck in traffic due to a storm or an accident. Running out of gas is the most common problem in traffic jams like these. Make sure you always have at least 1/2 tank full of gas. TO HELP WITH THIS, make sure to put extra cash in your Winter Emergency Car Kit. Sometimes debit/credit transactions are down, and gas stations are only able to accept cash. On the flip side, sometimes gas stations are closed, but you can fill up at the pump with a credit/debit card. Buy yourself a gas card, and put a few dollars on it each pay day. That way, you always have money set aside (cash or card), for emergency situations.

Festival Of Trees: A Beloved Tradition

festivaloftrees

For over ten years (we have lost count!), one of our favorite yearly traditions is attending the Festival Of Trees and purchasing a tree or two to benefit children and families at Primary Children’s Medical Center. (Watch a short video below done by KBYU last year on the Festival of The Trees.)

Last night we attended the opening night auction and gala, where those in attendance can bid on over 800 trees donated and decorated by organizations and individuals in the local community. We ended up purchasing two trees, two gingerbread houses, and many hand-crafted gift items.

Many trees are in memory of a loved one, and those stories can be read on a sign close to the tree. A few that we came across last night were recent high profile news stories, such as fallen Draper police officer Sgt. Derek Johnson, and the tragic death last year of two friends who died together while duck hunting on the Great Salt Lake.

“I feel that we need to help and support the community and the resources we have here in this valley,” said Mark Gines, owner Gines Auto Service. “Every where you turn around there is somebody that has been helped by Primary Children’s. We are very blessed to have them here in our neighborhood.”

Besides trees, you will find a gift boutique, fudge and other goodies, wreaths, quilts, performances, and the always-popular gingerbread houses.

The trees we purchased:

Last night there were two trees that caught our eye that we ended up bidding on and purchasing. Stay tuned next week when we will do a more detailed post about the stories behind the trees, as well as pictures of the gingerbread houses we purchased. You can view the trees we purchased on J-11 and J17-19.

Until All The Pieces Fit

2013-12-03 19.23.34This tree and display has a puzzle theme. We loved how even the snowflakes on this tree were made out of puzzle pieces! The decorator of this tree dedicated it to her young child who has been diagnosed with autism, and is flourishing due to the excellent staff and early-intervention program at Primary Children’s Medical Center. The puzzle piece has become the icon for autism awareness. The puzzle pattern reflects the mystery and complexity of the autism spectrum. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition.

Make sure to read about her Santa Project and see how you can help out!

Santa Is Coming To Town

We loved this Santa-themed tree and display. (See picture at top of this post.) With a cozy fireplace to curl up by and watch the classic “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”, we couldn’t pass this one up! It also comes with a smaller tree for tabletop display. Make sure to stay tuned next week when we do a spotlight post on the person this tree is dedicated to.

FREE DOWNLOAD: The Teen’s Guide To Smart Driving

Did you know that every 35 minutes in Utah, a teen-driver crash occurs?! Utah teen drivers are a small percentage of all licensed drivers, but they cause more than three times as many crashes as the average driver. Teens are at the highest risk of getting into a crash during the first two years of driving.

Because of these alarming statistics, the Utah Highway Patrol has declared this week "Teen Safe Driving Week". Visit their website "Don't Drive Stupid" dedicated to helping teens learn how to lower these statistics.

You can download the Utah Highway Patrol’s FREE guide "Be Smart. Be Safe. The Teen's Guide To Smart Driving."

We Fix Hybrids!

100_3885
Find us at:

Over the past few years, we have been attending trainings and classes all over the United States in order to become ACDC (Auto Career Development Center) certified to diagnose and fix hybrid and electric vehicles.

100_1757You can see by looking at the Hybrid Shop Finder that Gines Auto Service is the only independently owned auto repair shop in Utah that is ACDC certified to fix hybrid cars!

FREE Hybrid / Electric Vehicle battery test!
Spread the word to your friends and family that own hybrid / electric vehicles that we will test their battery for free to make sure it's where it needs to be! You can visit us at Gines Auto Service in Kearns at 4261 W 5415 S. You can also connect with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Our training:

May 2011
, Mark and Chad flew to California for a hybrid training class. Craig VanBattenberg from Massachusetts was the instructor, and did such a fabulous job teaching, that Mark invited him here to teach a training class on hybrids / electric vehicles.

May 2012, VanBattenberg's staff and our staff had worked for a month and a half calling auto repair shops from Ogden to Provo to invite them to the training, but the class ended up consisting of only Mark, Gary, Chad and Preston of Gines Auto Service.

June 2012, Chad flew to Massachusetts to attend a six day, advanced hybrid / electric vehicle training class, also taught by VanBattenberg.

The first two days were in class training, and the third and fourth day were in a shop doing hands-on training. The fifth and sixth days were a mix of in-class and hands-on, reviewing and confirming what he had learned the previous days. The class had 16 people split up into groups of four. There were enough cars for every person in the class to work on one.

The instructor had a variety of hybrid / electric vehicles to learn on, including two first generation Prius, two Second Generation Prius, two Ford Escape Hybrids, two Honda Insights, a Chevrolet Volt and a Honda Accord Hybrid.
During the class, the instructor had each group make a short presentation for the rest of the class so that everyone had a chance to learn the same material. While in the shop it was basically learn whatever you wanted and the teacher had all his tools, scopes, and meters so that any questions that arose, we could figure them out.

Each group also had an ACDC employee with them to answer questions and help repair the vehicles. Every car was taken apart and put back together more than once. Chad's group took a Prius that would not even move and rebuilt the high voltage battery in it. After getting the car fixed, they tested it out to see what happens if there is a high voltage short to ground. They found out the cars are built very safe.

"After being in this class I feel very comfortable testing and repairing Hybrid and Electrical vehicles," Chad said. "They can be very dangerous to anyone that doesn’t know what they are doing if they remove the wrong protective cover or grab a part of the high voltage system without the proper protection."

Know Your Dashboard: Oil Gauge

Oil Gauge on a vehicle dashboard
The oil gauge on your vehicle dashboard tells you the pressure of the oil running through your engine. This gauge is always different depending on the temperature of the engine, oil type and weight, outside temperature, working of the engine, and the design of the oil pump in the vehicle.

The lowest oil pressure will be at idle, and the highest oil pressure will be when the engine's RPMs are up.

You should never see the oil pressure below 10 psi. If the oil pressure is low, it means that there is no oil pressure in the engine, so no oil is moving through the engine.

You need to know what zero is on your gauge. The best way is to turn the key on with the engine off and monitor were zero is.

A Dura Max diesel truck will go over 80 when it's cold. That specific oil filter is made to handle more pressure. The gauge pictured above only goes to 80. It all goes back to knowing what is normal on your vehicle.

A Few Reminders About Winter Driving

It's always best to be prepared ahead of time
for Winter traffic jams like these ones!
Another big Utah snowstorm hit us last night, and many people out there were unprepared. SR-201 and I-80 were like parking lots, and many people got stuck in traffic for 3+ hours trying to get home!

Here are a few things to keep in mind when driving in Utah:
  • Keep your gas tank 1/2 full at all times
Not only is this important for your fuel pump, but for those that got stuck in traffic last night, they just couldn't pull off and fill up their gas tank. You may think you have enough gas to get from A to B, but if a snowstorm hits, you could get stuck in your vehicle for hours at a time.
  • Keep snacks in your vehicle
This is especially important if you are diabetic or have blood sugar issues. Even for those that don't, getting stuck in a traffic jam during dinner time makes it harder to stay patient when your stomach is growling. Items like peanut butter crackers are inexpensive, and are high in protein to keep your stomach full until you reach your destination and can get a full meal.
  • Carry a blanket
If by chance you do get stuck in a snow drift, or you have to turn your vehicle off while in a traffic jam,  being cold can get very uncomfortable, very fast! Always have a warm blanket in your vehicle for times like these. It also comes in handy if you witness an accident, and need to keep somebody warm to prevent them from going into shock.
  • Do not turn on your wipers until all snow has been cleared from your window.
Turning your wipers on while there is still snow accumulated can wear on your wiper transmission. This is one of the top auto repairs we see in our shop that is easily prevented. Also, make sure your wipers are always in good working condition. Don't wait until you are in that snowstorm to decide your wipers are worn out. Change them before they get to that point so that they are there when you need them.
  • Have kitty litter or ice melt on hand
Kitty litter is very inexpensive, and works great for creating traction if you get stuck.
  • Do not drive on worn tires!
This is something we cannot stress enough! Good tires are the key to staying safe while driving in wet and slippery conditions. Read our article on tire tips. Did you know that we sell tires? If you are in need of new tires, come in and we can get you as many as you need. We always do free tire checks if you are unsure if you need new tires. Stop by any time during regular business hours.
  • Slow down!
Please adjust your speed according to the weather and the condition of the roads. Just because the speed limit says 55 doesn't mean that it's safe to drive that fast if roads are slick or wet.
  • Winter Vehicle Kit
Read our list of items to keep in a vehicle at all times. A cell phone charger is especially important, because you never know when you are going to get stuck in a winter snowstorm traffic jam.
