FRIDAY TIDBIT: Cruise Control Information

Cruise Control Switch
DO NOT use your cruise control during snowy and rainy conditions:
Did you know it's extremely dangerous to have your cruise control on where there is snow, ice, or rain on the road? If you hit an accumulation of water on the road, without your cruise control on, your vehicle might begin to hydroplane. If your cruise control is on, when the tires lose contact with the pavement, your vehicle will accelerate to a higher rate of speed, and you will take off like an airplane. Click HERE to read more information about that.

How To Use Your Cruise Control:
There are many tricks to using your cruise control that most people do not know about:
  • Setting Your Cruise Control:
    • The button on the very end of the cruise control switch will set your speed. Once you are at the speed you want, tap the very end button on the cruise control switch, and this will set your speed.
  • Disabling Your Cruise Control:
    • If you want to turn off your cruise control, simply push on the brake. This will cancel your cruise control setting. You can also simply switch it off, but then your original setting will be lost and you will not be able to resume back to the speed you were at without resetting it (see next line).
  • Resuming Your Cruise Control:
    • If you have pushed on the brake to disable your cruise control, and want to resume the speed you were going with cruise control on, simply hit resume on your cruise control switch. This is located in the same spot as the on/off switch.
  • Increasing Your Speed Temporarily:
    • Let's say you are driving down the highway with your cruise control set at 65 MPH. You come upon a vehicle in front of you that is going 60 MPH, and you need to pass them. There is no need to reset your cruise control. You can push on the gas, increase your speed to go around them, and then when you let off the gas, your cruise control will resume your original speed. (Notice that this will not work for decreasing your speed. If you push on your brake, it will disable your cruise control.)
  • Increasing Your Speed Permanently:
    • Here is how to increase the speed control setting without stepping on the gas: Notice on your cruise control button the setting that says on/off/resume. If you tap it once towards resume, it will increase your setting 1 MPH higher. If you want to increase the setting by 10 MPH, tap it 10 times, and so on. This will reset your cruise control to a faster speeder.
  • Decreasing Your Speed Setting:
    • If you need to decrease your speed setting, and do not want to disable it by pushing on the brake, you can decrease your speed simply by tapping on the set button once. The set button is located on the very end of your cruise control switch. You will go 1 MPH slower for every time you tap. If you want to go 10 MPH slower, simply tap it 10 times, and so on.
If you need more explanation on these settings and how to use your cruise contorl, feel free to stop by our shop at any time and we will go over these with you.

FRIDAY FACTS: Cylinder Heads

Engine Cylinder Heads
The Cylinder head is the top half of the engine. This is where the intake and exhaust valves are located. The most common failure for the cylinder head is overheating the engine and warping the head. Make sure to keep plenty of antifreeze in your engine, and if it gets too hot, do not keep driving!

When a timing belt goes bad the piston hits the valves and bends them. The timing belt keeps the valve and pistons in timing with each other.

CLICK HERE to see a video of an engine that has cracked from not enough and improper antifreeze.

Did you know that too many keys on your key ring can put too much weight on and ruin your ignition? To avoid costly repairs, use as few keys as possible on your key ring when driving your vehicle. If you need to have a lot of keys on your key ring, take off your vehicle key and use only that when driving.

2010 Christmas Tree

It is a tradition every year at Gines Auto Service to purchase a Christmas tree from the Festival of Trees. It is truly magical to attend the auction night and read all of the inspiring stories that are the inspiration between each donated tree.

This year our Christmas tree is a Hot Wheels Car Tree! Make sure you stop in and see it! It will be on display in our office until the end of the month.

About Festival of Trees:
Almost as magical as Santa himself, a cold barren exhibit hall transforms into a warm, festive holiday haven. Each year, the magic of Festival of Trees unfolds, and with it the hope and future of children in need at Primary Children's Medical Center.

The Festival of Trees was inspired 40 years ago by a group of 15 women from along the Wasatch Front. These women were challenged by Lewis M. Jones, Chairman of the hospital's Men's Endowment Board, to identify a way to raise funds for the hospital.

Perhaps the greatest phenomenon of all is that everything is donated. The trees are decorated and purchased by individuals, families, organizations, businesses, and church groups. In addition, others generously donate items to fill the shops. Businesses provide the paper and printing of posters and tickets. Corporations offer their covered trucks and drivers to help deliver the trees, and so much more! Thousands of people join efforts by contributing countless hours and means to give “A Gift of Love" to children in need. In 2009, the Festival raised $1,522,497.58 for children at Primary Children's Medical Center.

History of Gines Service

Mark’s dad, Clyde Gines, started the mechanic business in 1960 at Clyde's Chevron in West Valley City. When Mark graduated from High School, he opened a gas station in Kearns, later to become the current Gines Service. Mark has operated that shop since 1978.

Gines Service was originally Gines 66, but in 1991 when Mark eliminated selling gasoline and got rid of his gasoline pumps, he changed the name to the current Gines Service Inc. Clyde retired in 1991.
Mark gives his appreciation and recognition to the best and most loyal employees he has ever had
in his twenty-nine yrs of business. Gines Service currently employees seven full-time ASE certified auto technicians and five part-time employees. The average amount of time an employee is employed at Gines Service is fifteen years.

Today, Gines Service provides a wide variety of services, from tires to alignment to oil changes. The business specializes in advanced electrical and technical diagnosis. Some of its services include license and registration and emails reminding customers when it's time to service their vehicle. All technicians are ASE certified and receive ongoing monthly training as well as AC Delco Certified and AC Delco training through Weber State University.

Mark says AC Delco has recognized Gines Services as TSS Accounts Technical Service Center - a significant distinction. Mark feels lucky to be a certified AC Delco service center because it requires following quite a few rules and regulations as well as having specific equipment and extensive ongoing training. AC Delco offers a comprehensive U.S.-wide warranty on all of its products, so if the part fails for some reason, they will tow the client's vehicle free of charge.

Mark's son, Chad, is also involved with the business and will likely be leading Gines Service into its third generation of family ownership. Mark plans to continue following the latest automobile technology and offering the same personalized service. His honest technicians thrive on resolving customers' automobile concerns.

History of Kearns, Utah

How did Kearns, UT become the town
that Gines Auto Service calls home?

CLICK HERE for history and more pictures of Camp Kearns.

During World War II, the U.S. Air Force wanted an isolated place to build a training base safe from any attacks by the Japanese and on the main rail routes to the Pacific Coast. The War Department bought about 5,000 acres (20 km²) of land where Kearns is currently located. Camp Kearns, as it came to be known, opened in 1942. Just one year later, Camp Kearns had 40,000 residents and was Utah's third largest city. It was partially a basic training facility for replacement troops headed for the war against Japan.

Most of the men who trained at Camp Kearns stayed only a few weeks and were glad to get away from it, as living conditions were horrible. Camp Kearns was closed as an active base in 1946, and the buildings and materials auctioned off in 1948. Some of the first homes in Kearns were built from materials left over from the buildings of the base. Camp Kearns gave an indirect boost to Taylorsville...CLICK HERE to keep reading
