There is no doubt that vehicles have got faster with time. The first vehicle to move under its own power for which there is a record was designed by Nicholas Joseph Cugnot and constructed by M. Brezin in 1769. A second model was built in 1770 and had a top speed of 2 miles per hour.
Today, the average speed of a car is 170 miles per hour. That is a huge difference from the time the first vehicle was invented!
The New York City Police Department used bicycles to pursue speeding motorists in 1898, and the first speeding ticket was issued in 1902.
One of Utah's claims to fame is The Bonneville Speedway near Wendover. Many speed records have been set and broken out there.
