History of the Logo: Mazda

Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese automotive manufacturer based in Hiroshima, Japan.It is said that Mazda coincides with the anglicized pronunciation of the founder's name, Jujiro Matsuda, who was interested in spirituality, and chose to rename the firm in honor of both his family and Zoroastrianism. The word Mazda derives from Ahura Mazda, the Avestan language name for a divinity exalted by the ancient Iranian prophet Zoroaster, as the source of wisdom, intelligence and harmony.

The M in the Mazda logo is fashioned like wings to represent flight, and symbolizes Mazda's "flight to the future". The V in the center of the M is spread out like an opening fan, representing  the creativity, vitalty, flexibilty and passion that is Mazda. The dynamic circle symbolises our readiness to spread our wings as we enter the 21st century.

GETTING TO KNOW US: Paul

One of our newer employees, Paul, started working at Gines Auto Service May 2011. He is an automobile technician.

His love of working on cars started early in childhood, as he grew up in a wrecking yard. He was born in Copperfield and grew up in West Jordan. He has lived in Kearns for twenty years. He has three children, four stepchildren, and six grandchildren.

In his free time he enjoys listening to music. He also enjoys reading a lot.

Friday FREEBIE: Shuttle Service

Today's FREEBIE is one of our favorites: our shuttle service.

Did you know that when you drop your vehicle off, we can give you a ride to work, home, the library; you name it! When your vehicle is finished, we can also come and pick you up and bring you back to the shop to get your vehicle.

Just ask! When you drop off your vehicle, ask about getting a ride, and we would be happy to! Some of our favorite times are spent visiting with our valuable customers, and many times this is during our shuttle service.

History of the Logo: Audi

Audi is a German automobile manufacturing company, and has been around since 1909. The name Audi came from its creator, Augush Horsh.

The logo is made to signify “Vorsprung durch Technik” which means “Advancement through Technology”. The logo was created in 1932 when four major companies merged together to create the powerhouse that is Audi today. It is a symbol of power and protection.

GETTING TO KNOW US: Gary

Upon entering our shop, you will most likely be greeted by Gary, one of our Service Advisors. This week if you mention to him that you read about him in the spotlight, you will receive $5 off your total service!

Gary has been working at Gines Auto Service for 31 years. He has always had an interest in cars and all things mechanical. Growing up, he used to pack the bearings in his pedal bikes. He is a native to the Kearns community, and his childhood home is in the neighborhood directly behind the shop. He attended South Kearns Elementary School, Kearns Jr High, and Kearns High School.

Many of you might know that he is the brother in law to Mark Gines, owner of Gines Service. Mark is married to his sister, which also makes him Chad's uncle.

Because he is ASE Certified and worked for many years as a mechanic, he is great at answering any question you might have. Call or come in any time with any questions you may have.

Outside of work, he enjoys riding 4-wheelers, cooking, barbecuing, yard work, and spending quality time with his family. He is also very knowledgeable about gardening, and knows what the best plants are to grow in Utah soil, when to plant them, and tricks to keep the soil at optimum quality for the plants. His homemade salsa made from ingredients in his garden is to die for!

Friday FREEBIE: Education

Today starts our new series of Friday FREEBIES! Everybody loves and appreciates FREE, so every Friday we will tell you about something FREE that you can get at our shop! That's right, absolutely FREE services!

Today's Friday FREEBIE is Education. Any time you come on our shop, we are happy to educate you on how to tell the quality of your tires, why you need to keep up on maintenance, what the difference is in quality parts and cheaper parts, why we are telling you a certain part needs to be replaced.....anything YOU want to know about, please ask!

We feel that one of the most valuable services we can provide to the community and to our customers is educating them about their vehicle. Because "Knowledge Is Power", the more knowledge you gain, the more power you can have in making educated decisions when it comes to your vehicle repairs.

If you are purchasing a new or used vehicle, please please please stop by and have us look under the hood before you buy it, and maybe even take it for a quick test drive. This can save you a lot of valuable money. Purchasing a vehicle is a big investment, and we want that investment to be worth your money! As long as we don't have to occupy one of our bays to take a look at your vehicle, or spend an extensive amount of time on it, we are always glad to check it over for free. There was recently a KSL news story about a man who bought tires that "looked new" from the KSL classifieds, only to find out they were 16 years old. There is no reason this should have happened; the year the tires are made is right there in plain site! Come in and let us educate you on what you are buying, how to tell  how old the tires are, etc.!

Also, don't forget about our FREE Women's Auto Care Workshops, held every 6 months. They are open and free to any women in the community, but space is limited to 25 participants each session. Our next one is tentatively scheduled for January 2012. Make sure your are subscribed to our blog and connected with us on Twitter and/or Facebook!

GETTING TO KNOW US: Josh

Today starts a new feature on our blog/facebook/twitter called "Getting To Know Us". Each week we will spotlight one of the employees at Gines Auto Service. During that week, if you come in and mention the employee spotlighted during that week, you will receive $5 off your total bill! At Gines Auto Service we all feel like family, and we want our customers to be able to be a part of that as well. 

As one of our newest employees, Josh came to Gines Auto Service in December 2010. He is currently working as our tech apprentice/helper, and can help you with checking your oil, tires, changing your oil, and other tasks. 

Josh got his love of working on cars from his dad, and from working on his 3-wheelers and 4-wheelers when he was growing up. He grew up in West Valley City but spent most of his time playing baseball for Cyprus High School.

He looks forward to furthering his education in auto repair, and becoming ASE Certified. He looks forward to many years being a part of the Gines Auto Service family.

His favorite things to do are golfing, camping, riding ATVs, fish, watching/playing sports, fishing, and anything outdoors. He spends most of his weekends with his dad, brother, and grandpa. They can be found golfing on Saturday mornings, and then riding his 3-wheeler the rest of the weekend in the Oquirrh Mountains. He is also interested in wildlife.

Working for Gines Auto Service, he enjoys learning more and more each day, and also the people he works with. 

As one of our newer employees, Josh was officially initiated into the Gines Auto Service family by participating in the BananaRama contest at our annual company party. You can view the video below. For the next year, Josh is considered the reigning BananaRama Champion!

History Of The Logo: Chevrolet

The Chevrolet logo is one we have all come to know and recognize. Chevrolet was founded in 1911 by Louis Chevrolet, and the logo was introduced in 1913 by William Durant.

There are a few theories as to how Mr. Durant came up with the design for the Chevrolet logo:

• One story tells how in 1908 he was vacationing in a French hotel, and was captivated by the design on the wallpaper. He thought it would make a great nameplate for a car, so he tore off a piece of wallpaper to keep with him. When he approached Louis Chevrolet with the piece of wallpaper, they both quickly agreed that it was perfect for the chevrolet logo.
• Mr. Durant's daughter claims that at the dinner table one night while eating soup and fried chicken, her father was sketching nameplates on a piece of paper, and came up with the logo.
• Mrs. Durant claims that while they were vacationing in Hot Springs, Virginia, around 1912 her husband was reading a newspaper and saw a design. He exclaimed how it would be a great emblem for the Chevrolet.
• Another story is that he was influenced by the Swiss flag.

However the logo came to be associated with Chevrolet, it is something we have all grown to recognize as part of a Chevrolet vehicle.

Meet: Susan Hilferty 

Costume Designer 

Highlights: 

• A Tony Award®-winning costume designer, Susan Hilferty has designed stylish attires for more than 300 productions, from Broadway to the Bay Area, theatre productions and operas, to dances, films and television. Her work has also been produced internationally in United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, Singapore, Germany and Australia. 

• Susan is best-known for her costume design for the Broadway production of Wicked for which she won a Tony, a Drama Desk and an Outer Critics Circle Award. 

• Susan considers herself an historian, a sociologist and an art historian. 

Some say “the clothes make the man” and if that’s the case, the performers of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents FULLY CHARGED have been transformed to stunning, exotic characters thanks to the talents of Susan Hilferty.

In addition to being a costume designer, Susan considers herself an historian, a sociologist and an art historian. “To me, what’s so exciting about designing costumes is trying to understand the world that the storyline takes place in,” explains Susan. Before designing costumes, she spends a lot of time researching the era in which the story takes place. Then she can create a parallel universe through the design of the costume to complement the set design. 

Susan received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Syracuse University and her Master’s degree from Yale. She is chair of the Department of Design for Stage and Film at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
